The Feather Carved series are what I tend to think of as "an exercise in minimalist spot-carving". The finishes and forms are as lovely as any pipe by Randy Wiley, but it's the single feather carving featured on each that really sets them apart. Where they appear and in what position differs from briar to briar, bringing a great deal to the pipe's composition with nothing more than a quick sketch of a feather - a small collection of simple lines. In a bent dublin it may be standing proudly amongst vertical grain, in a billiard it may be floating gently down the bowl, or, as in this exquisite bent apple, it may come to rest lightly upon the rim.
